always an adventure

since returning to school I’ve been pretty low on cash. How low?

well – the other day I didn’t have any money for lunch – but there was some free food left out on a table in the IMBA office area from a career information session that took place the previous evening. There were some egg salad and pimento cheese sandwiches, chunks of cheese, and chips. My choice was, to go hungry for lunch, since I didn’t have any money to buy any, or to eat food that had been left out on a table for who knows how long (it was of course refridgerated overnight, but you know how these things can sit around for a while during information sessions) and risk getting food poisoning.

I ended up compromising and going for some of the cheese (that looked pretty safe) with the chips (there were no crackers), and avoiding the egg salad sandwiches (the riskiest of the lot in my opinion). There were no negative effects – so I made it through another day of eating which is all you can ask for really!

that coupled with the free lunches on Wednesdays and Thursdays at the International House (one of the perks of being an international student, plus I get to practice my Chinese while I’m there!) means that I ate for free three weekdays out of five – and the other two I went home for leftovers. So I get an A+ on the saving money report card this week. Yay for me!

any day that includes free food cannot be entirely bad!

I often complain about having no $ as a teacher, but this makes me sad to hear that you have no $ to eat. Even I have enough $ to eat. Maybe someone from the Red Cross could divert some Hurrican Ivan funds to feed the hungry…

oh don’t feel sad – I am surviving well – but my days of hitting restaurants (nearly) every day for lunch (while working full time) are certainly over!

I’ll probably be joining you soon in the soup lines. Once the kid comes and Shannons not working.

After reading this I had to reassess my conclusion that the catered breakfasts, lunches, and dinners at local restaurants that were included with my EMBA program were bad. Bad because I never eat three meals except when I have school on those Fridays and Saturdays and I eat too much at each meal (oh, the lunches also often desserts that I eat too much of too).

    food for thought

my parents have been visiting and staying with us for a couple of weeks.
They have had a homecooked meal ready for us every night when we get home from work.
I think I should be sending food down to you to have for your lunches!
